The chat enables spontaneous comments and feedback in the webinar.
The chat is transparent - meaning everyone can see what messages are submitted. ie. also attendees can see what other attendees write, and react, or answer on it. This creates a fun and open vibe.
However, if you are many attendees, or don't want attendees to be able to see each others messages - you can use the Q&A instead. In the Q&A you, as host, always decide what is visible.
Engagement tip 1: Break the ice using the chat
As an attendee, you can easily feel intimidated writing in a webinar chat, and you don't want to be first.
To break the ice - ask attendees to write "where they are watching from" in the chat. Or state an interesting number and ask people to guess what it's about.
Can anyone guess what this number represents? 44% of webinar attendees does what.. Type your guesses in the chat.
This is a great way to start off the webinar.
Engagement tip 2: Activate the attendees using the chat
Take time to highlight a person writing a question or message in the chat. And mention their name while doing it. This makes things feel personal and interactive.
For example, using a chat message as a springboard to elaborate on a topic: Great point, [First Name]! Thanks for sharing.
Tip: Keep the audience motivated by highlighting the chat. Pick out a person and say their name "Welcome Jonathan" or "Thanks for your input, Eric". That will help create a personal vibe!
